You can only get help if you don't really need it as a general rule, much like credit today.

Many of us can resonate who grew up in rural areas, but our policy makers, while extrolling the virtues of "bootstraps," really consider those who can and want to use them, as second class citizens, who really add no value to the society.  Just like the majority of rank and file public employees, soldiers, artists and craftsmen, etc.  The values of the past make excellent campaign material so far as they don't extend to public policy.  A handful can be helped for PR purposes, incidentally, in the short term, while never addressing the long term problems, except the manufactured ones like SS.  Just hints that in some future time all be well while creating legislature that ensures that time will never come.

But the double kicker is the climate changes.  I've encountered hot and dry summers, but never anything like this.  Over $600 monthly average for electricity and water and that resulting from as moderate usage as possible to sleep and keep the plants and gardens alive, and that just barely. Very little produce because it was simply too hot.  Same prediction for next summer with predictions the change may be permanent.  And that following a winter with record freezes.  Record freezes in winter; record heat and drought in summer.  No idea what the future holds for farming and ranching.

Not much genuine concern in DC for any of this; just the need for austerity.  Bootstraps are a fine invention as long as they are attached to boots.

heat wave the first week in June, which is very early for PA. And if it's too hot at night, the fruit won't set. As a result, plants that should have been producing tomatoes by the third week of July didn't have anything until early August. And after the early heat, we had a month with no rain, then record rain in August. The climate's been weird for a few years now. If you grow things, you tend to notice the weather patterns, and they're changing lately.

Several years and more extreme each year with totally unpredictable short term extremes.

Next to Christmas, tomatoes are my favorite season of the year. I and a few other dedicated local gardners have managed until this year, while most others have gradually given up their vegetable gardens.  It's not nearly so good, but I can live with store produce for everything else but tomatoes.

At least it's moderate enough now that fans will suffice, but I'll have to continue the watering, and with all the chemicals in city water, nothing does all that well.  Just keeps stuff alive.

But the farmers and ranchers are really hurting.
