  •  I recently watched a documentary about world food (4+ / 0-)

    called Think Global, Act Rural. One of the more distressing things I learned is that it is actually illegal in France to share seeds unless those seeds are listed in a government book as being legal. 99% of the seeds in that book are hybrids - which you can't really trade... you have to buy those from a company. I was literally shocked. France!

    So, not that it makes you feel any better, but we're not the only insane nation making it hard on small farms and farmers.

      has a long-tradition of intense control.
      This can only be made in this region, you can't bottle sparkling wine as "Champagne" unless made in a specific few towns in France.
      Same in Germany, Italy, Spain...

      That "seed book" is not only protecting French companies, but has been the basis for prohibiting GMO seeds from Monsanto® and Bayer® from reaching market.
