My mother made the equivalent of $400-500k a year (in today's dollars) and I will never remotely touch such an income.

    •  Predictor is not a guarantee (9+ / 0-)

Statistically it can be true over a large population, but specifically not be true in your particular case.

      •  What is happening to the middle class (0+ / 0-)

        of this country right now?

And what has been happening for the past 20-30 years?

You have a large population that will never reach the level of income and benefits and quality of life (as well as life expectancy for women) as their parents.

I make a very similar amount of money as my mother did when she was employed full time.

      •  Depends on the demographic (3+ / 0-)

and maybe even the region of the country as to whether this predictor is accurate. Or not... as reports would indicate. Not sure whether your UID pertains to medicine or academia, but the healthcare field has definitely sucked up more than its fair share of our distributive pie as per how life energy is spent and remunerated.

Furthermore, the pensions and benefits are not there for the middle class of today compared to parents' benefits. Management, healthcare practitioners, attorneys, architects and some engineers... they get "perks" like healthcare and pensions. The rest of the middle class has seen that erode.

40 years ago, a man could support a family and his employer provided healthcare for that family... and that family could afford to buy a home, a car, put food on the table and go on vacation. And had healthcare for them all.

That doesn't happen to regular Joes anymore.

        •  Not lawyers and others who are (0+ / 0-)

self employed or contract workers. Lawyers start pretty low on the income ladder unless they land a good job. But there are a lot of low paid jobs without that. Even acting.

And 10 to 15% did not have health insurance nor any other benefits.

And a lot of regular joes, those in plumbing, auto mechanics and a lot of blue collar non out-sourceble jobs do ok.

A lot of health care workers get low wages and no benefits such as nursing home staff and home health aids. Nurses aides at nursing homes have really hard work, are injury prone and have no or lousy benefits.

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... *I'm asking you to believe in yours.* Barack Obama
