the evidence of the failure of their ideology is all around them

That's it in a nutshell, isn't it?  When I simply asked my ultra-conservative uncle questions on economic globalization and European austerity measures, he responded that I was using "talking points" and wanted to discuss Rush Limbaugh and Maxine Waters instead.

Why can't they connect with the bigger picture?  They are very afraid of what they'll see.

    Spot on.

will modify their ideology when presented with overwhelming evidence of its failure in some respect. A committed authoritarian ideologue, by contrast, will insist on more purity and greater adherence to ideology. They truly believe that the "problem" is that their ideas haven't been truly given a fair shot yet. In this respect, they are remarkably similar to their former adversaries who slavishly supported the idea of communist utopianism. The same mentality transplanted onto a different orthodoxy.

can be offered regarding religious fundamentalism and its societal effects. The Christianist sectors of our society vow ceaselessly to make us into a "Godly" nation, believing it will cure all perceived evils and transform us into paragons of virtue. They seem oddly unperturbed by historical experience with the process (Inquisition, Jonestown, Salem witch trials), usually responding, as with your presumably secular authoritarians above, that the failures cited were insufficiently committed to the "Godly" ideal or somehow otherwise experienced flawed execution of the concept, rather than consider the possibility that the concept itself contains lethal flaws.
