  •  The system works ? (0+ / 0-)

.. It's barely two generations old, and hasn't even completed one cycle (person spending their entire working life contributing, and then availing to an average life expectancy).. (i.e. a person at age 20 when it was enacted, is barely into eligibility today) .. if it were software, it didn't pass Beta testing.. and it's LONG since been on a mathematically impossible trajectory. If it isn't reformed, it'll go away on its own. It's already on "borrowed" time.. and reached the crisis level well before it's most critical opponents predicted.

    •  If we consider (0+ / 0-)

the amount wasted solely on military spending (well, not wasted exactly if you're an arms contractor, private mercenary corporation or fascist politician) along with the amount of wealth and human potential sequestered in the lockers of greed "the system" doesn't work at all.

Considering the recent failure of the financial sector, the culmination of "free marketeering" in all its glory, only assuaged with huge government handouts and debt obligations for the benefit of the already wealthy, we're looking at a trainwreck in fact.

To limit a critique of "the system" to the small part of "the system" that happens to serve the healthcare needs of the working class and poor seems kind of reductive, mean and rightwing.

Please don't feed the security state.

      •  Not mean.. (0+ / 0-)

.. and you present excellent points .. the "system" is broken in many ways, on multiple levels.. much of what we consider viable, aint viable any longer.. for reasons varying from waste/fraud, to not making adjustments until it's beyond fixing... military to social spending, and everything in between.

The federal budget per household, as a ratio of household income; has grown 900%, constant dollars, since 1960.

Are we getting nine times the return; no matter what part of government we're referencing ?

Something's gotta give, in a big way, very soon..
