This is a populace that has no clue.  Given that anyone might follow anything. The diarist is right that there is a psychology to conservatives but it is a psychology shared with by anyone simply having absolutely no understanding of a subject. The bizarre results in politics are the same as what was experienced in cultures throughout history in other fields like medicine, building, farming etc. How did Columbus end up thinking he was in India?  How could doctors sell tobacco as good for your t-zone?

The amazing advances we have made in other fields should not confuse us into thinking that somehow politics was raised up with them. Education is not a rising tide raises all boats. Our understanding of politics, and especially the average person's understand, has not advanced much since the time when people believed glass is a liquid

Glass is not a high-viscosity liquid at room temperature: it is an amorphous solid

    Thomas Pynchon

Ignorance is not just a blank space on a person's mental map. It has contours and coherence, and for all I know rules of operation as well.
