more clear on some of the definitions up front, and a little less loose in the wording. To be clear, I'm not really trying to comment on conservatism in our country's past history, though I do think that American conservatism used to have much more psychological diversity than it currently does. I'm mostly commenting on a mentality that I think has gained in strength on the right since the end of the Cold War.

I do NOT believe that conservatives are identical to Republicans, or vice versa, or that conservatism is identical to authoritarianism. Not all Republicans are authoritarians, or even conservatives. All I'm saying is that I feel the subset of conservatives who are driven by authoritarian psychology seem to have gained in influence within the conservative movement and Republican Party in recent years. Those are the people I'm talking about.

Thanks for your perspective. I'll keep it in mind when writing similar things in the future and try to keep the writing tighter.

in my criticism. Call it a left-over reaction to Janeane Garofalo. But I have to say that I'm extremely wary of psych profiles in politics, which rarely seem to me to rest on solid ground.

      •  I welcome the criticism. (0+ / 0-)

I do think it's easy to overgeneralize and take things too far when talking about this kind of thing, and it would probably be more accurate to say that some of these traits are stronger in some people while others are stronger in others. I don't actually believe that there is "one" single kind of authoritarian conservative. However, I do believe that political ideology and beliefs are very much determined by psychology. I think it's worth discussing, and I welcome criticism of my ideas. You did make me think about some ways that I could strengthen my arguments.
