    ...we'd all be dead within weeks...other than maybe some famiy farms which would last a little bit longer.

    Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" was one of the last great melodies in music history before all possible good melodies apparently got exhausted in the late 80s.

      But, in leaving it out of the equation, we overlook the size of the value they claim without adding any themselves.  We have seen a proliferation of middlemen comparable to the bureaucracy conservatives always complain about for the simple reason that's whom they perceive themselves to be in competition with.
      Our public corporations are also middlemen, facilitators and inhibitors.  To a large extent, if our agents of government are not corrupt, they don't claim a profit, unlike private insurance companies, financiers and military contractors.
      The reason we don't want profit associated with disutilities is because profit relies on an increase of use and what we expect from disutilities is that they shrink.  Take fire suppression, for example.  That's a service which is working best when the engines never have to be called out -- when preventive inspections and brush removal prevent wildfires from breaking out.
