Does that also mean that we need to look that way at Al Gore? He grew up around that same sort of racism and his father's record isn't that great on the issues.
I can't stand Rick Perry, I just don't think there is anything to this story.

but it might be hard to find.   I imagine that like most white people, myself included ... Gore is a "recovering racist." ...  but with more consecutive Sober Days than most.

If we go looking for racism in Gov. Perry's public record ... well, he's Governor of TEXAS fer pity sake.  Whatever his own personal private feeling might be his CONSTITUENCY seems to love that  States Rights, Secession,  and "Taking Our Country Back" rhetoric.

Take George Wallace for example. Mr. Segregation Today, Tomorrow and Forever, right ?

Wallace in his private capacity saw no upside to Jim Crow.  In 1958  he accepted the NAACP's endorsement in the Democratic Primary and said some rather harsh (for the decade) things about the KKK, who endorsed his opponent. He lost He learned. He trimmed his political sails to the Southern breeze. In 1962 he won.

Now, it's a well-known cliche that "A liberal is a man too broad-minded to take his own side in a quarrel" which is probably why the TEA Party rather than Social Democrats  is the force to be placated in this years' elections.

Personally, I think this next election IS "America at the Crossroads"... and there's a better than even chance that corporate Fascists will win. Granted: these are kinder, gentler and more patient Fascists than Germany's Class of '36.  But the goals  are the same ...  unlimited power and profit opportunities for the Ownership Class -- unlimited schadenfreude for the a disciplined, literate, patriotic and  low-wage workforce.

Therefore ... if the "Racist Can"  can be tied to Perry's tail .. well, to mix a metaphore --  "any stick will beat a dog."

I gave up "fighting fair" the first time a schoolyard "bully" stomped  me after he knocked me down.
