We just opened savings accounts at Navy Federal CU for my two kids.  We're also in the process of refinancing our mortgage with NFCU.

Just curious. I guess the other question for NFCU would be military or DOD civilian.

For USAA, banking is civilian-eligible even if the auto and property isn't.  I've got most of my banking (though not all) through USAA, along with auto and renter's insurance. I also have several accounts with a credit union (that's in another state, not that it matters these days) and one with a relatively large local bank, which I'm thinking about closing as all I have is a checking account there which is really less attractive than my USAA account.

Anyway, I've heard good things about NFCU (I'm not eligible), but I'd probably promote USAA, especially for anyone eligible for the insurance products. Lots of technology to make it easy to deal with that the only building is in San Antonio, great customer service, low rates, practically no fees, and refunded ATM fees (up to $15, but that's a decent amount of withdrawls.)

It was just logistically difficult to deal with completely leaving, per previous comment, BofA (which, by the way, we didn't start with: they sucked up our former bank, which had sucked up our former bank, which had sucked up the bank we started out with in the Boston area).

We've been very satisfied with USAA — used them for auto insurance, life insurance, and our credit cards.

Just because it's made up doesn't mean it isn't true.—Plan 10 from Outer Space
