    This was the great fear throughout most of human history—the terrible moral disaster that would rip a society apart... where 1 or 2% of the population becomes a creditor class and effectively enslaves everyone else.

    Look at the way most Americans are living: everybody is in debt, most people are working extra jobs or working in jobs they would otherwise never want to be in, in order to pay back those debts.

    If Aristotle were magically whisked into the present, he would probably not take the distinction between renting yourself out to someone else in order to pay off a debt and selling yourself to someone else in order to pay off a debt as anything but a legal nicety. He would probably conclude that most people are actually slaves.
