reading through King's comments ... one would have to think that there are no unemployed conservatives. (his: people who pay no taxes etc, etc...are voting for more benefits).
In conservative land, yes, no-one who is unemployed can be "conservative".  Either you hold "liberal" values that prevent you from being a capitalist dynamo leaping from peak to peak, or the simple fact of being unemployed will logically motivate you to vote for increased benefits and government intervention in the economy even if all you care about is your own self-interest (which conservatives will freely admit is not always good, in that one person's self-interest can diverge from the conservative moral ideal).

Do you know why they call it the American Dream? Because it only happens when you're asleep.

...and his comments today(?) that "if you aren't rich, it's your fault," and an interesting context begins to develop. It IS the fault of the poor that we're in this mess, and so the poor must bail us out! (Because if they were rich--and it's their fault they aren't--we wouldn't be nationally strapped for cash; we'd all be spending like crazy at Tiffany's and buying German cars....insert conspicuous consumption of choice here....)

      My head hurts...
