to the established order in this society (which I truly hope it does), the police will cease being "exceptionally helpful and courteous," and will start cracking heads, no matter how non-violent you have been up to that point, no matter how many times you've chanted "we're doing this for your pensions!" or "you are the 99%!"

The primary goal of a police force in a capitalist society is to protect capitalists and their appendages (i.e. politicians) from workers.  Other policing work is secondary.  Now, you may get some individual police to quit their jobs in advance of critical moments of repression, or even get some to stay in their station house and refuse to go out and bust heads, but there will always be enough police willing to go out and follow orders to clear demonstrations, strikes and other class activities.

The #1 rule of these occupations should be: YOU DO NOT WORK WITH THE POLICE!  You do not grass up your fellow occupiers.  Have respect and solidarity for each other.

The police brutality committee was trying to inject some realism into this debate.  Everyone would do well to listen to them.

Between excessive citizen activism and excessive trust or passivity, the former is far preferable to the latter. - Glenn Greenwald
