... and I believe this diarist does too, in general.

But the dark side -- which is a discredit to the whole movement -- is this kind of over-defensiveness, and over-eagerness to read offense where there is none.

Your comment reminds me of a women's psychology class I took in my psychotherapeutic training in graduate school.  Once, when I expressed my feeling that, should I ever get married, I would prefer that my wife not take my last name;  that she should keep her own individuality.

I was immediately attacked by several women in the class for using the phrase "my wife."

"See, that phrase shows your ingrained male-dominating sense of ownership of her!!"

I then had to make the point that in such a relationship I would not mind being called "her husband" --  and also that I frequently refer to other people as, say, "my friend" or "my dentist" or "my dad."

Similarly, at the domestic violence agency where I worked, a few women refused to refer to the "history" of our agency, or of the domestic violence movement, say, and would instead use the idiotic word "herstory" -- because clearly it was sexist to claim that history could only be "HIS story."

I had to point out that the word "history" has absolutely nothing to do with gendered personal pronouns, but rather comes from the Greek word "istoria" -- which simply means "knowledge" (i.e. knowledge of the past).

in the context of an 18 year old first coming to understand and realize gender bias. But this diarist isn't fresh out of high school, so it just comes across as sophomoic.
