    but it still would have existed.  Also, I think it's important to explain why, as Jews, we should support marriage equality.  Remember, this is not a religious right that he was talking about.  He was talking about simply a civil right — civil marriage.  He never said that an Orthodox rabbi should have to marry two men or two women under a chuppah.  He never said that an Orthodox congregation should have to recognize a same-sex couple as husband and husband or as wife and wife.  Those would be violations of their religious freedom, and, thus, in my view, quite offensive to the Constitution despite my standing on the opposite side of the issue re: marriage.
