  •  Good apologies are golden (18+ / 0-)

Learned about apologies from an old mentor (yeah, he was Jewish).

He was my boss in a retail advertising business. One time I screwed up an ad and had the wrong client phone number go out in a print ad. Phone numbers are the most critical parts of the ad. Gotta get 'em right. Probably going to have to give the guy a free ad next time.

My boss says, "Just go back to the client and explain that you screwed up and say, "I'm sorry" and shut up for a minute. Let him make the next move."

I did exactly that and the guy said, "Well I guess everyone makes mistakes. We'll get it right next time."

    •  This exactly on target. I hate weasly apologies (9+ / 0-)

or ones along the lines of "I'm sorry but..."
I try very hard when I've screwed up to say "I screwed up and I'm sorry." Unfortunately, I sometimes forget that and get defensive and whiny.
I'm also working on my husband (of almost 35 years!) to be able to give a straightforward apology. Half of our fights are caused by insincere and sarcastic apologies on his part (the other half are caused by my criticisms and pickiness!).
So today I'll give a sincere apology to him for being overly critical and I'll do it even though I know he won't be able to respond in kind. He has so many other virtues!

If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.
