  •  It's about control, not privacy. (4+ / 0-)

Don't be fooled into accepting the privacy pitch.

The institution of marriage is as much (or maybe more) about economics as "love."  The woman gets help raising her children. (Human children take years to mature and require much more care than almost any other species' young.) The man get exclusive sexual rights and an "in-house" worker.

Give a woman control over when or even if she gets pregnant, and suddenly men no longer have the leverage.  A woman can go to school, unburdened by childraising.  Ditto get a job and support herself. She can have sex with anyone she wants.

This threatens male control, from the patricarchical point of view. A woman who does not exclusively belong to one man?  A women who can compete against men in all fields? A woman who can earn her own money and be independent?

    A right-wing nightmare.

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.
