  •  My mom liked to read Civil War diaries and (11+ / 0-)

I read a couple passages from one.  It was written by a young Southern woman who in one passage described two of her slaves as being like members of her family.  In a later passage she contemplates the idea that the North might win and writes that she would rather see everything her family owns burn than for these two slaves to have any of it.  What Krugman says brought the idea to mind of how Southern slave holders lived in fear that one day their slaves might rise up and take revenge on them, they were afraid they might get what they deserved.

Tax them when they are reckless or greedy.

Expose and prosecute them, when they broke the Law.

at the rate that is proportionate to the benefits they enjoy as US citizens and corporations rather than taxing them when they are reckless or greedy.  They are the ones who believe that taxes are punishment.  The punishment they get when they circumvent the law and if they manage to skirt the law then the laws should be changed.
