  •  Here's Why It Works Psychologically (19+ / 0-)

I'm back to living in Tennessee after 8 years as a Brooklynite and what I've learned is that the "government" is a monolithic concept to most people and that creates a lot of frustration. People don't distinguish between an underfunded state government that gets poor results and an overstretched federal government that cannot mitigate the problems. Tennessee needs an income tax if it wants to improve its education system, but that is just not politically possible in the current climate. I'm in a "liberal" enclave, but there are plenty of decent people with functioning brains that are so indoctrinated to believe that government is the problem, that it is impossible to have a rational conversation. I've heard people say that if we just got rid of the government, things would fix themselves. These people have know concept of how society's infrastructure is built and maintained. I've tried the argument that taxes are "user's fees" which works for younger folks, but most people just aren't even open to a different point of view.

Another issue is visibility of services. People in high density areas like Brooklyn don't like paying taxes anymore than Red Staters, but they can see on a day to day basis what their city, state and federal dollars pay for because of the constant presence of noisy and visible services and infrastructure. Water treatment, transportation, fire protection and police are much less obvious in rural and suburban America. People persist in the illusion of self-sufficiency. These mighty hunter gatherers that stalk their prey at the local Wal-mart and just want to be left alone.

very similar situation to here in rural CO. People somehow think they'd be just fine with no roads plowed, etc....

to a hunter gatherer society most of us would die from lack of food when the hordes had eaten everything but rats and insects.

Maybe that is the underlying idea of the 1% ers... reduce populations by thier own hand by propagandizing them. Keep the clean water for yourself and private animal preserves and ...
