Do they worship someone named Jesus Christ, who they link to the historical figure of Jesus Christ who lived in the first century of the Common Era? Yes.

Do they have the same ideas about Christ, Christ's character and nature, and what Christ said and did as Christians who follow the Nicene tradition (i.e., Roman Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, Anabaptists, evangelicals, etc.)? Not at all.

If it's the name that's the concern, they do worship the same Christ as orthodox (small-o) Christians; if it's the nature of Christ that matters, they don't worship the same Christ.

can't call themselves Jews.  Only orthodox Jews living in Israel could call themselves Jews.

      Same goes with Muslim sects.

      Etc. Etc. Etc.

The whole argument is silly, and equates to one-upping, my religion is more holy than your religion name calling.

If they call themselves Christians, worship Jesus Christ, and consider the bible a holy text, well, I don't know how I (or anyone else) gets to be judge jury and executioner regarding their claimed worship.

The fact that this is being debated tells you something about the republicans.  They'd rather name call rather than discuss what's really important... The damned horrible state of the our country and how to fix it.

      •  the metric was set long ago (0+ / 0-)

and the metric has not changed. Either you measure up (agree to Apostolic and/or Nicene creeds), or you do not.

This is how a number of Christian off shoots were identified as apostate, and not teaching true Christianity. Just because the Wacko Cultists who followed David Koresh said they were Christians, does not make them so when they believed Koresh was Jesus 2.0.

        •  Before I read this diary of yours, I thought (0+ / 0-)

Mormons were smug and deluded into thinking they are special--God's new chosen people. Now I think Lutherans suffer from that same delusion. Please go play at Redstate or ChristianForums or any other place where people won't see your puke and then hold it against Democrats.

To see personal attacks on this website. This diary is about the historical institutional response of Christianity to poseur religions. The Democratic Party is a big tent, specific religions are more discriminating.

You do know that there are several Lutherans? You know, for your Hasty Generalization? And the Attribution Fallacy in your response? Pot meet kettle.
