  •  I think people need to go back to being proud (23+ / 0-)

to be hippies. I'm an old hippie and will always be that in one way or the other. I believe it was the defining movement of the past century (for good and ill) because it tried to take the modernist challenge to heart and synthesize something. That "something" was inadequate but it had all the elements of precisely what we need now. Compassion, courage, exploration, lateral thinking, mysticism, love of nature (including our own) and an effort to reject guilt and mores that do not have a practical basis which includes racial, sexual, and other attitudes we inherited.

We swam joyfully against the current for a few moments in history and then were whacked by the hammer of the culture. It hit us with repression and seduced us with an emergent culture of narcissism. It worked--they defeated the movement but it has had a permanent effect and those seeds that exist in my children and grandchildren are alive--in very different form but alive.

and nothing could ever make me apologize for that.  I'll be collecting my first SS check in November and despite the many cultural pressures, i.e., the wearing of panty hose to the office, I was a Hippie in mind and spirit...and I'm proud of that.

I embraced the Hippie persona in different ways than some, but the 60's were alive with, as you say, "compassion, courage, exploration, lateral thinking, mysticism, love of nature and an effort to reject guilt and mores that do not have a practical basis..."

The Limbaughs of today were those up tight twenty-somethings who wanted to be a part of it all but didn't.

    •  Yes. Steve Jobs said that his outlook was shaped (0+ / 0-)

… in beneficial ways from such quintessentially "hippie" influences as LSD and Eastern religion. Not the kind of personal experience you hear any other CEO or management consultant speak about.

    •  your comments always hit the spot (0+ / 0-)

      for me banger.

      this one especially...

they stomped on grass and psychedelics, and gave us crack and ice.
they decried the honest, joyful, life affirming rock music and we got moranz biting chicken heads off on stage and deathpunkdoomsatanicmetalthrash.

step on sex, you get porn.

very poetically summed up, your flashback.

these OWS would have been hippies in the day, some of them still are, not that that word 'hippies' ever came close to capturing what was going down.

what's missing from this crowd is the narcissism we had way too much of back then. these folks have seen through that, and the dead end it led to.

so much energy thrown away on cheap histrionics back then, now this movement is much more calm, rational and focussed.

step down too hard on these peaceful protestors and america will go up in flames within a year.

i think bloomberg gets this, if this had happened under the gwb madministration, the protestors would have been giuliani'd and chertoff'd away to the fema camps by now.

      ROCK ON MOT!

      why? just kos..... *just cause*
