A lack of historical knowledge has created some very flawed reasoning about the intent of the bombings.

The American crews used a Norden bombsight that was so new and highly classified any downed crews were expected to destroy them before leaving the plane.

Even with that advance the technique to give the best chance of destroying a target was called "walking in" and involved specific flying formations.  Once the lead bomber started dropping ordnance the others followed, deliberately starting short of the target and leaving a path of destruction very visible in images taken after the raids.

So the effort was not the maximize the destruction, but rather the maximize the likelihood of destroying the actual target.
