    and have his complete beethoven symphonies with the Philadelphia orchestra.  I love his approach for most things, but Beethoven is ok to let emotion get ahead of reason.  I suppose Muti's good for repeat listens for the reason you mention above, but live?  Eh, Muti's great live too -- the man doesn't need a baton when he can just flip his hair.   Still, for this piece, particularly, i like some Otto Klemperer crazy moods.

      the connection between Beethoven and Mozart.  I remember seeing Muti conduct Philadelphia in Beethoven's 1st Symphony.
