  •  Exactly. This is why ... (0+ / 0-)

my parish is probably the only house of worship in our city that doesn't have any 12-step meetings. Historically, 12-step groups do not accept donated space.* But if you rent out space, you are running a public accommodation.

12-Step groups like to keep the lines clear. They are just renting the space and do not change their rules or traditions according to where they meet. No dues are charged, but those who are able chip in to cover the rental fee, coffee fund, and such.

My parish also is one of maybe 3 churches in the  city that welcome and affirm LGBT members. We are smack in the middle of fundie land so we do not want to take any risk that we could get stuck renting to some gay bashing group.

We provide free space to a hot-lunch program for homeless people and others in need. However, it is sponsored by our diocese. There's a second site, and it is ... another Episcopal parish hall/kitchen.

*The parish no-rentals policy has been in place for many years. It's possible 12-step policy has changed during that time, but I'm not aware of such a change.

Just because you're not a drummer doesn't mean that you don't have to keep time. -- T. Monk
