post to my regular blog, if the story could conceivably be of interest to the general reading public I post here too.

I read in translations from Xinhua interviews with many of the families of the murdered crewmen. It's pretty tragic. Plus all those boats waiting to do the return leg of the journey. The river is in Laos all the way up to the high water mark on the W side, so Burma isn't technically responsible for what goes on there. Thailand has little interest above Chiang Saeng but they are the only strong police presence.

Burma just released a lot of political prisoners, then again the dry season offensive in Shan State was more intense than in other recent years.

The photos of CCTV look cold, rainy, high water.

Chances are they'll never find that missing crewman. I get emails from a woman in Washington state who's son went missing there 5 years ago. That river carries a lot of things away.

    •  I doubt they will be found (0+ / 0-)

The story kind of played out over the weekend with the families returning home. But you know that area, right? People have been fishing, working and trading in that area for a few thousand years and the the river is life there.

Mekong River is a fascinating place, one year I took boat, bicycle, bus and foot from China to Saigon, my first trip to VN and I will never forget that.
