in Vermont may be paying as much as $4 per gallon for heating oil within the next couple of months. A "comprehensive" policy won't help them keep their children warm at night when some of them will have to decide between heat and other necessities while Republicans are cutting money for food assistance, health care, etc. In short, we HAVE TO do both.

So it's unlikely that heating oil prices will stay that high for long - the global economy is headed into contraction and the Euro is weakening against the dollar, pushing down prices on all dollar-denominated commodities (like oil).  That price shift will probably be more apparent with a month or so.

In short, we HAVE TO do both.

Sure, but I'm still dismayed by how there's virtually no awareness of peak oil, the limits to growth, etc. among the people folks look to for progressive leadership, like Sen. Sanders.  While we have to do both, nobody in congress is looking at both.

    •  Vermont's heating oil comes from the East Coast. (1+ / 0-)

The crude oil it comes from is Brent Crude, which is traded on European markets.

      See the problem here?

WTI has been diverging as a benchmark, so Brent is the better benchmark regardless of where you are:

I clicked on your "follow" icon and I'll try to get up to speed with you on the economics side. I agree I'm not as strong there as I am on the geoscience side. I've now visited your website, though, and I can see it's going to take me some time. And, I absolutely agree that we're facing a catastrophe if we don't make some changes NOW.
