    we need to be as savvy in how we communicate our messages as the other side is in communicating theirs.  If the word "branding" bothers you, think of it as presenting ourselves and our issues on our terms rather than accepting the terms that others choose for us.

    Would you go to a job interview dressed like a bum?  Would you let your worst enemy describe you to the parents of the person you'd like to marry?  How you present yourself influences how people respond to your message.

    This doesn't mean that we should lie or mis-represent ourselves, just that we should pay attention to how we appear to those who we seek to influence.
