  •  My family that doesn't live upstate (11+ / 0-)

near Highland Falls all live down in Stapleton, SI. They left Highland Falls, Newburgh, etc, so that they would escape the dead and dying small towns, the economic stagnancy and the small town "justice" that everyone had started to be subjected to.

They went right into the mouth of the lion, believing that escaping to the big city would solve certain problems like culture shock and discrimination, like they always tend to do. Hold on to the assertion that it's just better in NYC and you can imagine you have changed your fate.

My mother thought it would be better in upstate NY where she grew up than in Cleveland where I grew up. She wasn't back home to Newburgh a year before my 16 year old brother was framed for something he didn't do and spent the next two years in adult prison.

There's no escape. My cousin Tony was killed on Wright Street in Stapleton in 1994 by a random drug addict. Nobody has been brought to justice. He was my aunt's only child.
