  •  yeah, and hacking too. (14+ / 0-)

I was a naughty "phone phreak" back in the day when that was the precursor to the early hacker scene, which has nothing to do with the criminal enterprise that has stolen the term "hacking" for itself.   (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were also both phone phreaks back in the day, and you can even see the influence in their more recent work if you know where to look.)

Thirty years ago, if you got caught playing with blue boxes and suchlike, it was a slap on the wrist from telco security, and seldom even an arrest, much less a prosecution.

Today's equivalent activities are sufficiently similar to the really-bad-stuff in the eyes of the authorities, that any 16-year-old who goes poking around in someone else's computer network is immediately thought of as a serious danger, and faces the full weight of the law.

And many kids go through a "pyro" phase where they try their hands at making things that go Bang! and Boom!.   That too is usually harmless enough, but today gets treated as a terrorist offense.

With the advent of terrorist drone aircraft (the FBI just busted a plot recently), soon the model aircraft hobby is going to come under scrutiny along with model rocketry.

"Minus one vote for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.
