  •  You forgot the spitting (12+ / 0-)

At the beginning of the Bush/Cheney invasion of Iraq, that's what I was accused of personally, when I went to an Oct 2002 March in DC, by the beloved in-laws.   They use the term hippies and hark back to the still open wound of Vietnam.

To this day, I'm sure they believe I engaged in this behavior.  They are so gullible to the military brainwashing.

Part of it, I bet is due to the attention OWS is getting in the media.  It was OK when the Tea Partiers did it, but other than electing fools to Congress with Rove/Koch $, they have sort of fizzled out.

They miss the attention!  Throwing bombs, both real and verbal, is the easy way to get attention back.

    Who are the terrorists?

    •  spitting on vets is one of the more enduring (10+ / 0-)

myths from the VN era; many of the myths of that time have been recycled.  Here is another example

claim to have been yelled at or gestured at but no one who was hit in the face by spittle which is how the story is told.  Each returning soldier's experience was unique so I cannot guarantee no grunt was ever harassed but for most of the guys, it seems homecoming was a very quiet personal event

          •  I'm not sure if this is still findable (1+ / 0-)

especially since I'm not even sure what show it was on, but years ago some NPR program did a very thorough and sensitive investigation of the spitting myth (in the Vietnam era), and they were unable to find a single verifiable instance of it actually happening. It never happened, it's a myth.

and on behalf of the many, many military families that post here, please reconsider how broad a brush you use when you paint us all the same color.

My future husband was fighting in Vietnam while I was at home protesting the war.  If there is any sense of superiority due to his being a career marine, I never found it.  Nor have I seen a lot of it in this military town we call home.

I suggest your in-laws may be watching too much FOX, which was finally turned off of the TV sets at the base hospital after Bush/Cheney left office.  Because the troops would rather have the sets turned to ESPN or even the Discovery Channel.
