true (and I believe you) - Mayor Quan is holding the bag.  The 'buck stops' with the head boss.  That is Mayor Quan.  I also believe the OPD needs a major overhaul by the Feds.  The ones that committed the worst of the acts must be punished - severely.
Despite all of your statements (true or false), Mayor Quan did sign off on this, and she did make a statement afterward, full of lies.  If she was misinformed, I'm sorry, but that is too bad.  She screwed up.  One mistake shouldn't ruin an entire career of good actions, but this was too big of mistake to dismiss.
Mayor Quan has to take some responsibility.  Please acknowledge that, and you won't be taking all the abuse here.  You are only appearing as an apologist for the abuse that occurred.
I don't think you are bad, and I don't think you are lying either.  This kind of analysis will all come to light in the sunshine a little later.

    •  Thanks for the sort of "support" (0+ / 0-)

despite my statements "true or false," but I never said that Quan has no culpability.

As a resident of Oakland, unlike most commenting on this issue, I was trying to add perspective on the person at the center of this mess, and the local political issues that may have contributed to it. For instance, it's nice you think that OPD needs a federal overhaul, but that has already been going on... for the last 10 years, and the OPD is in worse shape than ever. So you're kinda late to our party.

My point is that Quan has historically been on OUR side, and vilifying her as a jackbooted Hitler who personally pulled the trigger on Scott Olsen wasn't going to help him or anyone to resolve the tension. Hell, a recent comment just called her Moamar (sic) Quan. People want to blame somebody and she's the one at the top so that's how it works. But as an observer of Oakland politics for many years, something didn't add up to me. OPD has a lot of experience in city crowd control in the recent past. Quan, given her history, would not have just told cops to head out and bust heads. Initially I thought that maybe she was in the dark on the operation while out of town and a rogue element of OPD was responsible for the gross overreaction.

It now has come out that Quan signed off on OPD clearing the encampment, but at the nighttime protest where the violence occurred, photos show Alameda Co. Sheriffs with the gas guns in front of Olsen. (County Sheriffs have much less experience in urban crowd control.) Their firing looks like a failure in Acting Chief Jordan's control of the outside police agencies. It looks like Palo Alto's force may also have been involved. Their usual biggest worry is an occasional drunk Stanford student they have to drive back to campus, not angry crowds. These are the sorts of facts that can help determine what happened, so it doesn't happen again. In my opinion, that is more helpful than yelling "Fry the bitch!" See, some of us still have to live here in Oakland after everybody moves on to the next outrage.

I appreciate your, uh "concern" about me taking abuse (right before calling me an apologist for police brutality) but I've been here since 2003 and seen much worse.

And for the record, I don't post things that aren't true or at least my own opinion that I think to be true.

      •  Sorry ctami. I was mixing general comments (0+ / 0-)

and points of view with my own - and apparently not making the distinction.  I was not calling you a liar, and not trying to suggest that your statements are false.  I was just pointing out how others appear to view them.
To be clear - I agree with you.  No buts.
I don't live so far away either.  I come there often.
I will be more careful about who I try to back up from now on.  Looks like you don't need or want any help.   Your comments looked lost in a sea of calls for vengeance. I am glad there is someone speaking out for the many good deeds of Mayor Quan.  I'll keep my, uh, concern for you to myself from on.

I'll be in Oakland tonight to bear witness.
