  •  imo Yama is the most interesting (0+ / 0-)

character in the book - totally signed-up w/ the other Gods, but occaisionally cutting Sam a bit of slack. Yama really grew for me at the very end of the book, when he teams w/ another God to try to repair his love-obsession (Kali), whose mind was damaged as he attempted to rescue her from defeat in the final battle.

    V. Vinge is a wonderful writer, "A Fire upon the Deep" is perhaps his best work - it's got a great analog to our 'net-centric' method of communication, & he imagines the best aliens i've ever read. ughfortunately his last 2 books haven't been nearly as good, but that's no reason not to read AFutD, which was totes awesome.

he posits that "Zones of Thought" define our galaxy - higher tech is available w/ increasing distance from its center. the faraway outliers in the "Transcend" realm might be gods, oracles, or a Blight that threatens civilization. it's just about the best SF i've ever read.
