so the relevant baseline is whatever is in the automatic triggers, and that against whatever havoc default would wreak.  The democrats on the supercommittee are pretending to propose this knowing the GOP will only ever object to tax increases.  The GOP can't very well run against a proposal made during negotiations that never comes to a vote, especially when the that same chart shows them on the wrong side of the tax the rich issue, and this further hurts them since they'd have to agree to hypothetical, future defense cuts that, themselves won't happen.  (Today's congress can't bind tomorrow's.)  Once that's factored in, this looks a lot more like a clean debt ceiling rise, and if Democrats don't go to circular firing squad default, they have a nice issue against which to run against Republicans (to left on taxes, right on defense for those so inclined), and in return the GOP got a way to vote to raise the debt ceiling, not raise taxes, and get their base off their backs -- for not cutting medicare in actuality.

Insofar as nobody's negotiating in good faith, to their great credit, it's not so much that the proposals are dumb, they're not even proposals.

the GOP has it's campaign strategy all wrapped up and ready to go.  The Democratic Party is dead.  I don't know what those fools with a D after their names were thinking.
