most NATO countries have 3 month deployments.  After 2 or 3 months their is nothing left, dulled responses, etc...

Got this guy elected president & he enacted the other guy's policies. True Story ! ! !

    •  In WWII, 90 days on the front line was the limit (1+ / 0-)

After that units were considered burned out and needing rest and recovery.

Deployments like Iraq and Afghanistan are 'different' in the sense that they are WORSE than historical combat. WWII was defined as long periods of boredom with brief intense periods of combat.

This was more true in the Pacific where the invasion and occupation of an island would take a relatively short period of time.

But in a place like Afghanistan, there is no 'front line' - you are ALWAYS at risk.  The stress levels are far higher.

The problem with short deployments is that in 'nation building' you want to build long term rapport with 'locals'.  But the Army was supposed to be moving away from this (the Vietnam model was believed to be something you did NOT want to do again).

Of course it is hard to build rapport when nobody speaks the local languages or knows the culture....    more US arrogance and ethnocentricism at work.

Life isn't fair but you should try to leave it fairer than you found it.
