from Denver for a long time - but we used to say, in all seriousness, that when you were in trouble, the last thing you wanted to see was a Denver cop.  I thought they had made more progress in cleaning up the PD.

And it strikes me as more than mere coincidence that just yesterday, the Mayor announced his appointment of a new Police Chief - and was apparently forced to do so early by some actual journalist breaking the story.  He's not yet on the payroll because he is not yet blessed by City Council. The new Chief, Robert White, hails from Louisville, Kentucky and was hired specifically to clean up the PD and reestablish the public trust, something he reputes to have done in Louisville.  The current Chief is understandably a bit put out.

To further heighten tensions, Chief White will be Denver's first black Chief of Police.

So was it some kind of final hurrah?  Intended as a political smear?  Or was it just Denver police doing what Denver police do?
