  •  To be honest, it's not a very good story, (9+ / 0-)

    but if you scroll down about 3/4 of the way, you'll see that it turns into the earliest discussion (in fiction) about the rudiments of cryptography and codebreaking.  Even Poe acknowledges that the code in the story is extremely simple, so it's more of a very basic primer, but it was massively influential in terms of getting this kind of thing to an audience of popular fiction.

    For what it's worth, I pulled up Powers' The Gold Bug Variations on GoogleBooks, and he does indeed quote this Poe story quite a bit.  Now you've got my interest piqued... thanks!
