    My brother did the same as you with LOTR.

    I've only read it once, so far. I'd like to get hold of a set of the 3 extended DVDs of the movies, with all the scenes I missed in the cinema.

      And I've read LOTR innumerable times.  Was less interested in the "old stories" by themselves than in the context they provided to the trilogy itself.  But then I trained as an archaeologist, and have always been attracted to ruin and the past in a skeletal and/or incomplete/legendary form.
