  •  I just want to back you up here. (9+ / 0-)

I am a former Federal law enforcement officer.

"Back in the day" we were trained extensively in respecting the rights of our citizens.  We were trained extensively in believing in the very words of the US Constitution.

While there have always been "bad cops" - people who could not or would not follow the law or respect our citizens' rights, there is a new atmosphere in the wake of this post-9/11 security state atmosphere.

From officers accosting tourists innocently taking snapshots to the extremely rude and abusive attitudes very common in the TSA, these new day officers do not have my respect.  Why not?  Because they are not even trying to respect their fellow citizens.

All that said, the individual officer is not the culpable party in any of this:  The failure is a failure of the department and of the police system to maintain good management practices and to reinforce key concepts.  The failure is that of police chiefs, their deputies and their leadership through the departments.

They should be held accountable. What I have seen sickens me and it would sicken the people who trained and instructed us years ago, if they were still alive to see this.

Police brutality of this nature is never justifiable. Never. And those who perpetrate it violate their oaths to uphold the Constitution.

What a Police State Looks Like: "On one side: soft human flesh, unprotected human skulls, cardboard signs, slogans they chant, armed with belief in 1st Amendment rights. On the other: helmets, body armor, guns, batons, chemical weapons." -- JanetRhodes
