that was one of my famous "Germanisms." At least that's what I call them when I literally translate something that would just fit perfectly. Sometimes I know that the expression doesn't exist in English and I say it anyway, but in this case actually thought there was such a saying as "clothes make people." It's such a normal, iconic and deeply ingrained concept in German, how could it possibly not exist in English? ;-) Thank God my dear friend you came to rescue me, once again!

But it's less American than English, perhaps.

      Thump! Bang. Whack-boing. It's dub!

I knew there was something equivalent, I just bungled it it. Thanks for solving the mystery, dadadata. Cool screen name, btw!

that it is a British English expression, and tbh I can't imagine an American saying it in a serious way, only as a joke, like this:

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.   Mark Twain, US humorist, novelist, short story author, & wit (1835 - 1910)
        or maybe this:
Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance . Beecher, Henry Ward

So if you had Oxford English in school, Sven, as normally taught in the schools here, you may very well have learned it.

This is getting pretty far off-topic, Sven. Sorry.

in school, of course, but I don't think we ever got that deeply into it. (or more likely, I was asleep ;-)

I think this has been a very informative detour, very much appreciated, translatorpro.
