  •  the old social contract is over (0+ / 0-)

what we're doing, whether we recognize it or not, is dreaming up a new one for ourselves, and organizing ourselves against the 1% that decided to kill the old peace.

the 20th century is over. the 21st has not yet completely been born. we need to be the midwives of a new peace that suits our times and needs.

    •  The US Constitution is the social contract. (0+ / 0-)

I can't claim to have taken a poll, but I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of people out there in Occupy are not trying to replace the Constitution - they're affirming it.

      •  the constitution's just one part of the contract (0+ / 0-)

even a cursory glance at american history reveals that the social contract - or even the meaning of the constitution to american society - has undergone several distinct shifts, with new social contracts replacing old ones that had become dead letters.

we're in one of those moments. not good or bad, it just is. i would not be surprised to see the constitution as symbolic  legitimating authority as well as aspects of its rhetoric and substance preserved in any new social contract, but it will not be as simple as saying "the constitution is our social contract."
