The culture here is very Darwinian. Steve Jobs was a very committed capitalist who believed in the survival of the fittest, as do most high tech entrepreneurs. Tech was one of the first industries to embrace Asian manufacturing. In addition to lower costs for labor intensive products the tech companies, and their investors, had no interest in spending time and money on environmental issues and were never willing to even think about the possibility of unions. Today most tech startups do the conceptual, design and pro-type work here, but as soon as something even moves to pilot runs, it is done offshore.
