  •  I don't intend to close my Wells Fargo account (6+ / 0-)

Not because I love the greedy banksters.  But because they actually get done exactly what I want.  Move money from point X to point Y. Done.  I'm sorry folks, but I do that form time to time, and I've been burned by other banks.

Frankly, from this branch, I've never had such good service from any kind of bank.  But I have told them, I won't go in for any of their "premium" services.  And I've told them their international currency transaction services are a blatant rip-off. Which they are. You can always do better at any bank in a foreign country than at any American bank.

Digression: Need to travel internationally?  Just take enough cash to get you to the hotel. If it's not a hovel, chances are right at the hotel they'll be able to  exchange dollars at a far lower rate than any American bank.

And the money doesn't hang around long anyway.

And anyway, I get why folks are withdrawing their money. I in fact approve.  And I hate the smoke being blown up my butt because they're scared folks like me will withdraw money.'s not that I love the greedy banksters...I expect to be ripped off somewhat for the services they provide, but unlike banks like Chase (the worst bunch of incompetents and crooks on the planet - from which I did withdraw an inheritance the moment I could, I'm kind of soft on customer service.

    •  You can use ATM cards in most countries now... (0+ / 0-)

You actually get very competitive rates and there's no need to carry around a bunch of cash.  When I travel internationally I use my credit card as much as possible (once again, very competitive exchange rates, and it has no foreign transaction fee), and then use the ATM for any cash I need to withdraw.  I've verified that the rates are competitive by checking the actual exchange rate on the day of the transaction.

The exchange places are usually an absolute rip off.  They charge you several percentage points from the actual exchange rate going both directions.
