I have an account in a big bank but everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is tied to it and I am in no position to close it at this time. I need to get several other things in order before I could ever begin to consider closing it.

That's the biggest problem with the big banks. It'll take me until early next year to be in a position where I can close my account, and I will close it, but there is no way I can close it at this time.

    •  You can start now, though (0+ / 0-)

Open the new account with the minimum it requires, and let it sit. If you can, add a little money now and then to keep it active. It will make it easier later.

    •  It's not that bad (0+ / 0-)

I had a few direct deposits and whatnot in my BoA account and started the process the day they announced the $5 fee back at the end of September and opened my new account then. Over the course of the month, I was able to get everything switched over, and yesterday, when I saw that my paycheck finally went into my new account (which was the last outstanding direct deposit) I called BoA and closed the account.
