fellow immoderate Republicans to kill of a jobs and infrastructure bill that Maine desperately needs to repair its substandard bridges and highways, what's the difference?

The point isn't what liberals on DailyKos think; it's what voters in Maine think. But my answer, based on analysis of elections and campaigns, rather than my own social democratic ideology, would be that recently, the senators from Maine have been more concerned with losing a primary from their right than being defeated in a general election from their left, and their calculations are accurate. It's quite possible that after Snowe wins reelection, she may tack to the left sometimes, figuring that she has 6 years before she might face real pressure from her right again. Would I trust her to do that? Not on your life! But that's what people on the margins of parties are like: Undependable for all concerned. Just like Ben Nelson for the Democrats, or like Arlen Specter used to be.
