We speak Amuricun. We'd have a very hard time giving up our version of the British class system.

In the first place, we'd have to admit we had it. We don't. Our national myth is that we have a classless society where the lowliest orphan hawking newspapers and shining shoes can make it to the top. We'd also have to give up the idea that we are all completely independent rugged individuals, capable of taking on everything nature and society can throw at us and winning. How we ever attached this idea to the cattle herding cowboy, our nation's consummate team player, I'll never know. No cowboy ever herded 1,000 head of cattle from Abilene to Kansas City by himself. Ever.

In the second place, we'd have to admit it was British. We don't believe that, either. We tell ourselves we are a melting pot with contributions from the whole world. Despite the fact that our governmental structure, language, holidays, cultural traditions, common law, literature and music are almost completely British transplants.

In the third place, we'd have to get over our whining that it's so easy for you little European countries, you are so homogeneous, while we are so diverse. Which is our special way of saying that if we stopped discriminating on the basis of class, we would do so on the basis of race, and that would be bad, so we will just keep our class based discrimination, thank you very much.

    We are so doomed.
