    environmental science, we have barely studied the mesophere and the lower thermosphere, where a lot of important thigns happen. They are too high to reach using existing aircraft and too low to sustain orbit. Samples and other readings from there are critical in refining climate and poluttion models, but we know almost nothing about them. Yes, we can see some things with orbital sats, but it's kinda like the difference between a hurricane hunter aircraft getting data on a cyclone from inside the eyewall vs watching it from space or on radar.
