  •  Your students are incredibly (9+ / 0-)

optimistic if they think that the current financial system is going to survive the next 3 to 4 decades.

The cheap energy and stable climate that the financial system depends on are already in the rearview mirror.

    •  Capital can move a lot faster than you think (3+ / 0-)

As oil runs out money will move to whatever proves to produce power.

      •  Assuming Society Holds Together and Most of (7+ / 0-)

the present developed world population remains at developed world levels.

There are ways for that to fail.

      •  You left off the asterisk (5+ / 0-)

As oil runs out money will move to whatever proves to produce power.*

*This assumes, of course, that there is a viable destination for the money. It would have to be something that is energy-dense and inexpensive enough to replace oil, and sufficiently non-polluting that it pulls us from our current suicidal environmental course. Because if it isn't abundant and cheap, the economy is toast. And if it isn't clean, humanity is toast.

As far as I know, no such energy source exists at present.

        •  Depends on what you mean by "cheap" (1+ / 0-)

          That's a relative term.

All forms of energy are expensive, in direct cost and in environmental cost. Solar and wind produced electricity is getting cheaper relative to the cost of fossil fuels as an energy source.

If you were to fully account for all of the costs of fossil fuels, by accounting for the cost of disposing of the waste product (CO2), a disposal fee if you will, then that source of energy would be a lot more expensive than it appears to be now.

Solar electricity would be much "cheaper". Maybe the best place to put your money right now is to buy an electric car or plug-in hybrid.

has held back competition from alternative energy power until such time that they have developed control of the distribution of it and created a secure monopoly around it

they want to continue MONOPOLY - Oligarchy ( if you want to understand a giant monopoly of a not so scarce resource made super scarce study up on history of De-Beer diamond mining http://www.amazon.com/...

The Last Empire: De Beers, Diamonds, and the World BUT of course it is not the last empire afterall it is the model for ALL mining empires.... especially space resource mining )

        solar power ( an more ) are threatening their strangle hold on money-power  - it competes with their  monopoly/cartel profit models;

and resources from mining (for instance Mars  - -  do you recall that the first contract made by members of the BushCo cabel after the inauguration Feb 2001 was between Halliburton/Cheney with NASA for drilling/mining rights on Mars)

all cheap alternative sources of energy/power are or/ could be in competition to interests planning to mine asteroids/planets for metals/mineral resources.....

all of those conflicting interests planning for profiting from space resource mining may be jockeying for 'who gets the biggest piece of the pie' but they definitely all agree that cheap energy will be the death of them..... they don't want it and they won't have it............
