  •  We would now have twice the American forest land (14+ / 0-)

if we had not stopped growing hemp across our nation in the late 1930's. An acre of hemp produces more usable short fiber pulp than four acres of old growth forest while requiring only a fraction of the air and water polluting caustic chemicals to finish the pulp into superior paper products than softwood fiber. It's shameful that America for the last seventy plus years has cut down our forests to produce paper products like toilet tissue to be flushed away when we could be producing a superior paper product from a plant that grows very quickly like hemp. Hemp grows from planting to harvest in as little as 100 days and can be grown in much of America year round while it takes generations for a forest to regenerate.
Even worse than that, we could also become completely energy independent if we grew hemp as a major rotation crop across our nation. Hemp is four times more efficient converting solar energy into usable biomass fuels than any other commercially viable crop. An acre of hemp can produce up to 100 gallons of ethanol or the energy equivalent in methanol gas. That same acre would also produce about 15 gallons of hemp seed oil that can be used directly as heating or cooking oil or easily converted in local factories to biodiesel with better performance than fossil fuel diesel without the sulfur and 85% less CO2 emissions. Small local factories could be built to take crop waste mixed with hemp biomass using biomass digesters could produce enough electricity to replace all the coal fired electrical generators in America. We don't need to release the carbon sequestered millions of years ago from burning fossil fuels. We could replace almost all of our fossil fuel use with green advanced biofuels while putting millions of Americans to work.
Instead of sending hundreds of billions of dollars to foreign oil producing nations we could be create a new green economy circulating that capital in our communities producing more than 25,000 products that can be made better and greener with hemp.

    •  Fascinating (6+ / 0-)

I know nothing about hemp so you may be, as the saying goes, blowing smoke ... or not.

Breaking Big Oil's monopoly on our politicians is a necessary first step.

    •  Facts are nice, but fear may be quicker -- (12+ / 0-)
...Chinese government is now actively promoting hemp cultivation as a tool for lifting rural Chinese out of poverty.

China will build multiple hemp cultivation bases in Yunnan, Heilongjiang, Gansu and Anhui provinces as well as the autonomous regions of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia by 2020, a project that is expected to bring three million people out of poverty, according to a Shanghai Daily report citing an official from the People's Liberation Army's General Logistics Department.

The government in Xishuangbanna now provides farmers with free hemp seeds plus technical training. According to the prefecture's party chief Jiang Pusheng, there are nearly 10,000 farmers growing hemp in the area, farmers who through hemp cultivation stand to double their annual income from 2,000 yuan (US$293) to 4,000 yuan.

      •  They are making automotive body panels (7+ / 0-)

from hemp composites in Europe too. The hemp composites are less expensive, dent resistant and ten times stronger than steel per pound. Hemp composites are also far safer than fiberglass in an accident. American auto makers have to import the hemp from Canada or Europe to produce these body parts here at far higher cost than if we could grow it here.
I'm afraid the vested interests against domestic hemp production are far more powerful than the fear we are competitively falling behind the whole world. Big Oil, Big Pharma, King Cotton and all the other economically and politically powerful special interests that own most of our politicians care only about their own short term profits, not what is actually best for America.

    •  Hemp is a wonder crop (12+ / 0-)

It's really a shame that ignorance has kept it from being cultivated in the US for the last 70 years. It's as though solar power were banned because some people get skin cancer.
