  •  Yes, from the perspective of our (6+ / 0-)

rotating dictatorships, privacy is the key to secrecy and secrecy is the key to their power.  Which is why it could be argued that the FOIA is a more potent instrument for the transfer of power to the people (who never have had it, really) than the various civil rights legislative victories.  The people can't make informed judgments, if they are denied access to information.
And that, btw, is the crux of banking regulation.  It is an exercise in getting the information of what the managers of our currency are doing and how they operate out into the public arena. Obama should be given credit for that. OWS has taken the ball and running with it.  Why should Obama bother to play cheer leader?
Because nobody will know what he's achieved if he doesn't toot his own horn?  Shame on us, if that's the case.

    •  Interesting point about the FOIA, nowadays it (3+ / 0-)

seems as if we're often blasted with so much info (and misinformation, of course) that almost everything is available.

The tools each of us with a computer and an internet connection have couldn't have even been imagined earlier in my lifetime. Even with the FOIA and our tools and determination we can still be kept in the dark sometimes. The good thing is that virtually no one can count on being able to control information as could have been, and was, done in earlier times. Dictators, wherever they are found, corporate moguls--in fact everyone, must expect exposure.

Maybe I'm too skeptical, but I don't entirely trust the FOIA (or any of our other achievements). I can too easily imagine requests for info being denied improperly. While it can be abused it has undoubtedly done massive amounts of good. I know some of the more obvious examples, but think my appreciation would grow if I was more familiar with some of the other ways it has helped us.

    •  Secrecy and lies... (2+ / 0-)

If you read Emptywheel (Marcy Wheeler's blog) you will learn about the lies.  She writes about them on a daily basis.

Last March my friend's son was killed by members of the drug cartel in Juarez.  She went down there because she had to bring his body home and try to get her daughter-in-law, a 21 year old widow and her grandson home.

When they prepared the body for cremation here in CO, they removed some 20 AK47 bullets from his body and his widow recovered another 80 on the property.

My friend is suing the Federal government for his death because the guns they killed them with were given to the drug cartel (and marked) so they could then trace them back and arrest the entire cartel.  It was an ATF "sting op" and now Holder is being harassed by the Republicans because the DOJ knew about the "corrupt and failed" operation and did not stop it until about a month ago.

The local Denver station that is reporting on this failed operation asked her how she knew it was the same guns given to the cartel by the US government.  She told him, "... I pulled it off the Internet."  So he took the bullets and sent them to a lab for identification.  Now I've learned that Holder will testify (after releasing 600 pages of documents about the failed op) in front of the House Judiciary Committee so they can go after Obama/Holder for knowing about the operation and not closing it down.

Of course, their next step is to use the secrecy and the White House's knowledge of the program to impeach Obama.

While they are doing this my friend is paying attention to all of it so she can provide video content of the hearing and pdf files of the 600 documents Holder just released to win a very easy to win multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Federal government for her son's death.  It is a no brainer because these corrupt politicians are ONLY concerned with their own bank accounts.

Moral of the story:  They are ALL corrupt.  If you can name me one member of the US Congress who isn't, it's likely Bernie Sanders who will win that trophy.  There may be a couple more,  but I don't know who they are.

As much NOW believe that voting and politics is irrelevant and corrupt, we MUST find those amongst us who are beyond corruption (is there such a thing?) and do whatever it takes to put all of the criminal Dems out of office.  If we don't do that then WE THE PEOPLE are to blame.

        •  Hannah, who have you ever worked to get elected? (0+ / 0-)

ever? Who has been perfect enough for you? And how did he turn out?

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... *I'm asking you to believe in yours.* Barack Obama

      •  Except Obama and Holder didn't know (0+ / 0-)

and as far as any law suit you really don't know much. these avenging suits tend not to be so sure.

Remember the big super dooper great lawsuit on behalf of the Family of Natalie Sarkosian? I don't think one was actually filed.

Victoria, your blithering will help put shiny white Republicans in office. Neither Obama nor Holder are corrupt. Not all of the Democrats are sell outs. You do the Kochs work for them.

    •  we are dedicated to taking down Obama (0+ / 0-)

for some mythical perfect leader — which we would object to because s/he is not perfect.

We have soured the public about the really good health care reform bill because it is lacking one particular piece that would not make much difference in the provision of actual real health care.
