what is fair and authentic discourse? why give the white gaze that much power.

    •  Well, that's the thing. (4+ / 0-)

Somebody's got to police it around here.

Otherwise, this just turns into 4chan.

      •  I go back and forth on this (5+ / 0-)

I don't think it so much a function of subject matter as style. I think the style of writing (title, word choices, etc) that you chose when writing to a larger audience is different then when your writing to "your base".

Provocative language is often the only way to draw attention to an issue. But if your trying to persuade people, I think it often gets in the way. Writing to simply "tell folks what they need to hear" often isn't effective if you don't leave them educated. I'm the first to admit that I talk and write differently in different settings. It's not being a chameleon it's just chosing what is most effective.

i am not in this to persuade.

i am not in this to win allies.

i won't compromise my brand to do so. of course i have different voices, but the polemical voice is different from my academic voice or my radio commentary voice.

perhaps that is the issue w. some, in fact my gut tells me it is infuriating that I won't play the please me now talk to me nice game.

folks who are really down, the true white allies and others know the score, the others can keep stepping.

your not in this to persuade and not in this to win allies, what are you in this for? That's not a question you need to give me an answer for it's just a question I'm wondering?

            I'm here for four reasons.

            1) I want more and better Democrats.

            2) I want a vibrant independent progressive movement this overlaps point 1 but isn't the same. Progressive ballot iniatives, media.

            3) I want to connect to other progressives and learn.

            4) I want to make sure stories and issues that are relevant to black folk get a wider audience.

Those are my four main reasons. I have other blogs I visit to discuss issues that are specific to black culture. Most of these issues I just don't think have a lot of relevance to Daily Kos. That's just my opinion.

But, in Internet ecosystems, individual discretion and judgment without firm rules breaks down as a regime.   Especially when talking about race, where a single thoughtless word can set people off, and where the potential for misunderstanding is so acute.
